I haven't updated my blog in awhile - mostly because things have been stressful and who wants to read (or write) a whiny rant? So what better way to renew this thing than with a quick blog about something awesome that happened to me and Gaspar last night? I know the title gives it away but anyway ...

Those of you reading this that know us (hi Mom and Dad the only people that read this anymore - haha) know when we got married two years ago "Calling You" by Blue October was our wedding song. And in general we are big fans of the band. So last night we got the chance to see them in concert at Webster Hall. The concert was great. And at the end, Kevin hooked it up so we could meet them! YAY!

They could not have been nicer and more down to earth. It's always weird when you meet someone famous that you really like. You don't want them to jerks or divas and they couldn't have been farther from that. Gaspar bought their latest album on vinyl and the whole band signed it. We told them about "Calling You" being our wedding song and Justin, the lead singer, signed it and wrote "Calling You Forever You Two" and Ryan wrote "Congratulations Gaspar And Heather" - AWESOME!

I just did this on Facebook - it's one of those chain survey things you pass around - and thought it would make a good blog post. :)

This is an intimidating one!!!! Almost impossible!

Think of 16 albums, CDs, LPs (if you're over 35) that had such a profound effect on you they changed your life. Dug into your soul. Music that brought you to life when you heard it. Royally affected you, kicked you in the wasu, literally socked you in the gut, is what I mean. Then when you finish, tag 16 others, including moi. Make sure you copy and paste this part so they know the drill. Get the idea now? Good. Tag, you're it!

Heather's 16 Albums

Some of these are cheesy and silly but they are honest answers. Albums that changed me. Not necessarily Top 16 of all time. Some I haven't listened to in years! It was hard not to put down what you *should* have been influenced by (some cool punk or jazz of some such crap) and what you were *really* influenced by. :)

1 - International Pop Overthrow - Material Issue
They will always be my favorite band of all time. My father gave me a sampler they gave out with Guitar Magazine and I was instantly in love. I will always miss this band.

2 - Hangin' Tough - New Kids On The Block
After a summer of my cousins Jennifer and Starr, and my friend Lori, playing it over and over I found an obsession to last me a lifetime.

3 - Labyrinth Soundtrack - David Bowie
I went to see Labyrinth in the movie theater, not truly aware of who David Bowie was, fully aware that I loved the Muppets and all things Henson. When Bowie appeared as Jareth my jaw was on the floor, Who is THAT? As a Bowie fan I could have put down Hunky Dory or something. But if I'm being honest, "Underground" and "As The World Falls Down" influenced me way more than "Queen Bitch" or "Life On Mars".

4 - Janis (Soundtrack) - Janis Joplin
If I was cool I'd write "Pearl" or something. But, as is the case with most of my music, my Dad introduced me to Janis Joplin by renting "Janis" from Videobusters, the documentary film about her that was released shortly after her death. I played the soundtrack non-stop and eventually collected everything she ever recorded.

5 - Help - The Beatles
Continuing with the same theme - now as I write this maybe my Dad had a campaign to make sure I knew good music - my Dad rented Help! I liked the Beatles but after seeing them in this crazy spy-hemed comedy/musical movie I loved them. As you should!

6 - Aspects of Love - Original London Cast Recording
I had seen other shows before Aspects but this was the one that gave me my love of theater, particularly musicals. I mailed away for the libretto and sang along to every word.

7 - Rent - Original Broadway Cast Recording
The first time I played this I hadn't seen the show. I was working at Grass Records as an intern and an advance copy came in the mail. I put it on and was instantly teased so I shut it off. But I took it home and bought a ticket shortly after. I stopped counting how many times I'd seen Rent after 25.

8 - Les Miz - Original Broadway Cast Recording
This was a high school thing. (Mike Johnson? Jessie?) We played it non-stop, acted it out, what dorks we were! But I am still in love with this show. Hello! Terrence Mann as Javert? Friggin amazing.

9 - Exile In Guyville - Liz Phair
OK so this may be a "cool" answer. Something that someone was a teenage girl in the 90s should list but it's true. SHe sang about stuff I didn't exactly "get" yet but thought I did or pretended I did. And she didn't have a particularly good voice but I loved it anyway, maybe because she sounded just like a normal person.

10 - She's So Unusual - Cyndi Lauper
I was 7 when this album came out. Who was cooler than Cyndi Lauper? A girl from Queens who had half her head shaved the rest sticking out in crazy colors? Singing her ass off? I wanted to be her. I passed around a poll in elementary school that said "Who's Better Cyndi or Madonna?" And you had to write your name under either Cyndi or Madonna column to cast your vote. When Madonna started to pick up votes I ended the poll and wrote my name under Cyndi. She beat Madonna by my one vote.

11 - Hey Babe - Juliana Hatfield
There are a few people on this list that know how nutty about Juliana Hatfield I was (Gaspar, Rey, Domenique, Daryl." One of the people on this list called her Basketball Head! I won't say who.) She was the whole reason I ever interned at Mammoth - which in turn changed my life.

12 - The Muppet Show - original soundtrack to the TV show
13 - Sesame Street Gold

14 - War - U2
My father loves u2. He went to see them on this tour. I was too little to go. He called me from a pay phone inbetween the show and the encore to tell me about it. They are still one of my favorite bands.

15 - The Monkees - The Monkees
Those who know me from childhood know that the Monkees were an early obsession of mine. They made a comeback in 1986 - their 20th anniversary. WOR Channel 9 started rerunning the entire series that summer. My parents taped every single episode for me on our brand new VCR. I went to see them in concert like a million times. I met all four of them (even Mike Nesmith who wouldn't tour with them and had become a country music guy and TV producer.) Whenever I got grounded the first thing my parents took away was my Monkees stuff because I loved them so much. Still do. :)

16 - Another Love Song - The Frames
This was their first record. And definitely not their best when you compare them to the brilliant band they have become. I am one of the few who got into them because Glen Hansard was in The Commitments and I collected every project from every cast member. The Frames is probably my favorite band that is still active and making music. They make music that punches me in the gut with their awesomeness every time.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I work up feeling very unThanksgiving-like today because I have to go to work. And I am super grouchy about it. But then I thought about the fact that Gaspar has to work EVEY Thanksgiving and this is only the first time for me. Then I thought of all my friends and family that are in the same boat. And all the times I have been unemployed in my life. And how thankful I am to have a job, especially right now. Wait ... did I say thankful? On Thanksgiving? :)

This has been a very difficult but also exciting year. Some of the excitement I could have done without but right now, today, life is good. So before I leave for work here is a short list of what I am thankful for. It's not short because of a lack of things to be thankful for. It's short because I am procrastinating and need to get my butt in gear to get to work!

My husband Gaspar and our family (and cats :) )
- I am truly blessed to every way. I have a loving, caring, supportive and hilarious husband who spoils me every day. I have parents who have always been there for me and are the epitome of role models. I have an extended family that I wish i could gather in to a big group hug - grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, who I love and miss. I have a whole bunch of inlaws who I love dearly and hope to see when I get home today. :)

All my wonderful=2 0friends, new and old
- I have the greatest friends in the whole world. And this year I have been able to make a bunch of new friends and reconnect with many old ones.

Health
- some close to me were very sick this year and today they are either no longer sick, or feeling better than they have in a long time.

My job
- while hectic and stressful it has also been rewarding and I'm glad I have a paycheck

And this may seem like a weird one but I am thankful for having fun! I have had so many crazy adventures, especially this year. Whether it was going to Vegas, hanging out with my friends every week, Broadway shows, and of course my New Kids insanity. I can hardly believe my life!

Wii Fit

My husband truly spoiled me for my birthday. First we went to see Freestyle Love Supreme. Then we went to see Jeremy Piven, Raul Esparza, and Elisabeth Moss in Speed The Plow (amazing - I love David Mamet plays and this is one of my favorites.) Monday we celebrated Kerri's and my birthday at the very decadent and fattening Simly Fondue in Atlas Park. LOVE that place. And this morning - WII FIT!! (to work off all that fondue - haha.)

So I just finished playing with Wii Fit for the first time. And it is AWESOME. I had been prewarned that most people, when they first start using this thing, are automatically obese according to the BMI index. And then your Mii plumps up! AACK! BUT on the upside, I haven't gained any weight since I stopped the crazy diet I was on from January till about August. So that's definitely a good thing. I can pick up where I left off.

It also gives you your Wii Fit age according to your weight, height and BMI. Honestly, I was expecting somewhere around 50. Because I rarely move at all unless it is to chase a New Kid down the street. (kidding! Sorta...) But I ended up being 35! YAY! Which is great since I turned 32 today. So not bad.

A few things upon first use - I like the Yoga and Aerobic stuff the best so far. Biggest surprise - I love the running! My balance is definitely questionable. In the yoga it's pretty good. In the balancing - yikes. I cannot dodge flying soccer balls at all. No surprise here - I cannot do a push up if my life depended on it. I also love the skiing though that will take lots of practice.

They have definitely succeeded in creating a game that makes exercising super fun. While this isn't a proper workout it succeeded in delaying my plan of eating my face off and watching TV by a good hour. I mean the last (and only) attempt I have ever made at exercising at home was when I purchased the Marky Mark workout tape in the mid 90s. And I've only watched that tape while eating ice cream and watching Mark Wahlberg flex his muscles.

I am exhausted and have to get to work so I'll try to get through the story. My wonderful dear friend Kevin hooked up the most amazing experience - my mother and I went backstage at Madison Square Garden to meet the New Kids On The Block!

I have been very fortunate this year to have many crazy and fun New Kids adventures but this one just might be the best! Their assistant Zach led us upstairs. We all waited in line in this corridor. I think my Mom was more nervous than I was! Their bodyguard Robo came out and said "Ladies no pictures, no flashes." Everyone was kind of stunned and bummed out. And then Robo says "I'm just kidding! Have fun ladies!" and started cracking up. After what seemed like ages, the guys came out! And they took us in small groups to meet them. We got to hug each one, chat a little, then take a photo with them (and other fans to save time.)

I went straight to Donnie (sorry Jordan!) and hugged him and kissed him on the cheek, He hugged me for a LONG time! I started thanking him, telling him I loved him , the expected babbling. :) Then he pulled on the bottom of my shirt and said he wanted to look at it! I had made a homemade t-shirt with a picture of Donnie and it said "It's gettin hotter like The Block up in the Summertime" (from their song "Dirty Dancing") and some other stuff. Donnie said "Nice shirt. I like the lyrics, I like lyrics. Very nice."

Then I went over to Jordan (who I had walked by completely - oops) and I went to hug him but he was holding on to my shirt. And he said "Oh sorry, I wanted to read your shirt. Only Donnie?" and he smiled and read the shirt and hugged me. Then I gave him a card that I had written to all five (yes - a fan letter - wow haha) and said this is for all of you. He patted my shoulder, put it in his pocket and said thank you. I thanked him and told him I loved him, too.

While this was going on my Mom was all hugging Donnie and Danny and saying she was representing all the Moms lol! They totally loved her, it was so cute. She had five small silver antique hearts in a bag. She had written something like "a mother's love for you" (Mom - what did it say?) on it and she gave it to Danny. He seemed very moved by it. (For those of you who don't know he lost his mom to breast cancer.) And she hugged him. My mom also had her homemade shirt on that the guys were reading. It had a picture of me in 1988 and one of me last month meeting Donnie that said 20 Year Supporter of My Daughter's New Kids Habit. Hee Hee!

I hadn't gotten to Danny, Jon or Joe yet when it was time to take the picture. I grabbed one side of Donnie, Mom grabbed the other, Jordan was on the other side of me. I sorta leaned my head on Donnie's and Jordan had his hand on my shoulder. AWESOME!

Then I ran over to Danny really quick and gave him a huge hug and thanked him. Now this was the BEST PART! Donnie says to Mom, "Mom where the daughter?" I was ready to freak out. Donnie goes goes "Get in here! Mom and daughter group hug! Group hug!" AAAACK! Donnie grabs me and Mom, then Danny jumped in and they squeezed us into a tight circle and hugged us. I thought I was gonna drop dead from happiness. My face was smooshed into Donnie's chest. Then we had to go so as Donnie let go, like a complete dork, I said "Thank you for making my dreams come true!" And Donnie said "You're welcome, thank YOU." Then I waved at Jordan and Danny.

Grabbed a quick hug from Jonathan and thanked him. I was wearing the New Kids track jacket that they sell on the tour. I've seen Jon wear it a lot and he said "Hey nice jacket!" I said thank you, told him I loved him (it's like an automatic response from me to tell them I love them) and ran over to Joe. Didn't get a chance to say much to him, just hugged him, thanked him and yes, said "I love you."

Mom was still hugging Jonathan when we had to go (lol). It was the greatest experience! I mean ALL FIVE right there! And they truly could not have been sweeter. Very warm and attentive and nice. They really tried to make the short time you had with them special. And then a picture on top of it? AAACK! They hadn't even gotten to the people who had paid for the VIP ticket packages. I don't know how they do it - meet and greet literally hundreds of people and then do a 2+ hour show.

What an experience to hold me over - until NEXT SUMMER'S TOUR! HAHA!

One of my favorite books "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold has been turned into a movie. And even better - my second favorite Wahlberg brother, Mark, is in it! The book is dark, touching, and over all just beautifully written. The book is about a girl, Susie, who is raped and murdered by a neighbor and then watches over her family in heaven as they deal with her death and try to find out what happened to her.

The book is written in the first person and told from Susie's point of view. It'll be interesting to see how that translates on screen. In the book, even though she is dead she is still the main character. Peter Jackson directed the film so I have great faith that he handled the story and the potential supernatural aspects of it well.

I don't know how many times I have posted about the greatest Broadway show in years - In The Heights - on this blog. Less than the New Kids maybe but definitely often. :)

Anyway, the creator and and one of the stars of the show, Lin Manuel Miranda, is leaving the show in February. This is a beautiful show with dozens of characters and will most certainly stand on its own without Lin. But I strongly suggest seeing it before he leaves. It's a brilliant musical and seeing Lin himself performing the show he worked on for years, that he has seen succeed beyond his dreams - well it's a very special experience.

Broadway Flea Market 2008

Got home from this year's Broadway Flea Market a little while ago. Lots of fun and extra packed with people. There was a lot of fun merchandise to choose from and lots of celebrities. Highlight of my day was Mom, Dad and I over to the side eating our breakfast when Ilene Kristen, who plays Roxy on our soap opera One Life To Live, walked by. Mom called her and she stayed and chatted for quite a bit. LOVE her!

I usually stay till the very end of the day but this year I left around 2ish. It was crowded and the chance to get a ride home to Queens with Mom and Dad was way too tempting. Still did A LOT of shopping! Here's what I ended up with:

High Fidelity "Championship Vinyl" shirt, Sesame Street staff shirt (the back says "It's a good gig"), Wicked photo with green Baby Elphaba (see below), coffee cup and piragua props from In The Heights, demo of off-bway version of In The Heights.

Two Wicked shirts, Beauty and the Beast shirt, High Fidelity button, In The Heights prop candle signed by the entire cast, and a Swatch watch (!!!) worn as a costume piece by the character of Starr on my soap, One Life To Live!

Grey Gardens t-shirt, Spelling Bee t-shirt, and Grey Gardens sweatshirt which was an opening night gift to the cast and crew.

NEW KIDS ON THE TODAY SHOW - THE POSTPONED PERFORMANCE (last story I promise!)

Sometimes life is actually really great. And just when you think it couldn't get any better it does! It's nice o have that outlook instead of the opposite.

As detailed in my previous blog postings, the Today Show cancellation was very disappointing. But then Joe McIntyre, Jonathan Knight, and Danny Wood came out to the line to meet and greet all the us fans that had been waiting for days to see them. They hugged us, took photos, signed autographs. And that was a priceless experience that never would have happened otherwise. Then in the following days, my dream of meeting all five New Kids, particularly Donnie Wahlberg, came true at their signing at Best Buy. And Donnie was so over-the-top amazing that it was more than I could have ever hoped for!

What could possibly happen next?? Well...

The day the Today Show was canceled, al list made its way down the line where we were all supposed to write our names and email addresses. The idea was that if the Today Show could do anything for all of us who camped out they'd be able to reach us. I figured it was a long shot but gave my info anyway. You never know! As it turns out it was great idea. A day or so later I got an email from The Today Show. It stated in part: "The boys are back. They will be performing on our plaza on Thursday, September 4th. Due to your loyalty in waiting outside (some of you camping for days) to see the New Kids, we would like to ensure that you don't have to do it again. We will be putting all of your names on a special list so you can be in the front pen for the concert."

WOW! The Today Show and the New Kids really came through in a big way! Unfortunately, Katie (the biggest New Kids fan I know) had to work! Boooo! And Kim went back to Texas. Awww! So I was on my own. But then found out my new Canadian friends who we had camped out with were driving back down to do it all again! (Hi Sarah!)

The Today Show let us in around 6:15am and gave us our VIP passes. We felt special! Then they led us through a building and as we approach the doors to the plaza I look outside- and who is standing there on the stage a few feet from the door? DONNIE! He was taking pictures with fans and signing autographs. I couldn't believe it! He was right there!!!

I was much more composed than at Best Buy. No crying, screaming, declarations of love, etc. But I was still excited and somewhat nervous. Donnie being so close I immediately reached for my camera. Fumbling, I manage to trun it on and the screen says "No memory card." OH NO! I had left it in the card reader at home! Then I remember I have the memory card from work because I had to upload merchandising pix. I deleted all the product shots as quickly as I could and started snapping away.

Donnie broke away from the crowd for a bit, testing mics, playing a little keyboard - he seemed very involved with all aspects of the performance. He then returned to the edge of the stage and I finally - FINAL LY! - got to take my picture with Donnie! (Thanks you Sarah!) He seemed very tired but was very sweet and friendly with all the fans. My mission was complete! YAY!

Now not only had I met all five, taken my picture with them , but I was about to watch them perform just a few feet away from me!They performed "Step By Step" and "Single" (with Ne Yo.) And they performed them so many times - between soundchecks, rehearsals, etc - that I wasn't even totally sure which was the actual televised version! Haha! Donnie and Jonathan hung out outside for most of the morning. And all five were on stage almost the whole time! They would kid around with each other, Jordan danced a lot, Joe cracked jokes into the microphone. This was more than I could have ever hoped for.

Between rehearsals, Donnie was off stage standing behind the barricades taking pictures with more fans. Sarah suggested taking a picture with him together. He smiled and was very friendly and we took our picture. He started to leave but there were more girls coming over. He said "I'm so tired. But it's ok." Girls started screaming "Face time!" and "A million hugs!" - things he posted in his blog and s aid on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrmhljJaaYE He shook his head and laughed a little and stayed. I felt bad for him! I was close enough to say "Bet you regret saying Face Time!" But he responded "No no I meant it." What a gracious and patient man.

Jonathan made the rounds as well and Sarah took her picture with him. It's funny that the one known to to the most reclusive has been spending so much time with the fans. A bunch of girls at the center of the stage were screaming and Jonathan said "Hi! Haven't seen you since yesterday!" HAHA! With all the New Kids events all week there were a lot of familiar faces.

Al Roker wasn't there so Chris Cimino was doing the weather. As it turned out he filmed a lot of the report right by us. So Sarah and I were in a lot of the shots. Right before one of the reports I asked him "Do you like the New Kids?" just to be goofy. He said "Uhhhh..." I prompted " YEAH ya do!" And he said "Yeah I do!" Then I told him I loved the weather as much as the New Kids and that the weather rocked. Just to be dumb. And wheree did we end up during the weather? Right behind him. HA! During one report th ey went from the live shot to the weather map. And while Chris Cimino continued doing the weather, Donnie came out and was right behind us We didn't know where to look! I mean we were on TV - but Donnie was right behind us! So the shot returns to Chris and the crowd behind him and we have our back to the camera because we are looking at Donnie instead! Then we spin around - and just in time - because Chris is asking us some goofy question about Willard Scott being the sixth New Kid or something.

Donnie stayed and stayed, taking photo after photo until everyone there had some "face time." As I stood there taking pictures, watching all of this go on, I had to pinch myself. This entire experience fulfilled every childhood wish, dream and fantasy.

So the performance is long over and Donnie finally about to leave. He is still in the crowd among the fans with their bodyguard, Robo. Then Robo asks "Is that gate behind you open?" referring the barricades. I tell him they are locked. He talks to some Today Show people so they can get the gate open and escort Donnie out. Robo says "Can you be cool?" Of course I'm nodding yes, all nervous. Robo then wa lks Donnie through the cowd and steps away for a second to open the gate. And now Donnie is standing directly in front of me! I had to seized the moment and say "Thank you so much for coming back!" And Donnie said " Thank YOU for coming back" And makes a kiss face!!!! AAAAACK! I was dying! And then he left.

It was the perfect ending to a crazy, whirlwind, dream-come-true week! I said good bye to all the friends I made and headed to work where reality awaited. :)

After the Today Show debacle we were more determined than ever to see all of the New Kids (For me - especially Donnie.) So we went home to rest up and came back Monday to - yes - camp out AGAIN - this time to actually meet all 5! AAACK! Donnie Wahlberg has alluded me for 20 years and this was my shot to make my biggest unfulfilled dream come true. So Katie, Kim, Tricia and I camped out at Best Buy and made new friends along the way.

At 8am they opened the doors so we could purchase their new CD "The Block" and get a wristband that guaranteed you to meet the guys. We could have left but instead decided to stick around and be in the front of the new line - the line to meet them!

Fast forward about 10 hours of sitting around, making new friends, singing and answering the constant question "What are you guys waiting for?" (Most of the time we were honest but some of us began to answer everything from the new Barney DVD to a meet and greet with the original line up of Menudo. HA!) Being up front ended up being well worth it! They let the first group of us into the store early and lined us up around the staircase so we could watch them come up the stairs and make their big entrance! After what felt like ages, all five started walking up the stairs. Everyone started screaming and taking pictures. And here's where my problem began. The second I saw Donnie I started crying. Uh oh! Donnie did this adorable spin around with his arms raised. It was awesome!

They then took their places at the table, did some quick interviews and took photos for the press. Occasionally they would turn around to face the crowd and smile and wave. Girls started yelling at Donnie to take off his hat, take off his sunglasses. I screamed that he should take off his clothes! What is WRONG with me! Am I 13??? Now it was time to start filing in towards the table to meet them. I was, at this point, composed. Nervous but not crying or screaming like a lunatic. Then su ddenly I'm next. And Robo (their bodyguard) is standing there. And I freeze! He urges me on and I'm saying to myself Be cool, you're not crying and that's great so don't start.

So now I am standing in front of DONNIE WAHLBERG! And like a crazy person I start crying. Close to a sob. It's bad. And Donnie says. "Hi baby." AAAAACK! That made it worse! Now I am really REALLY crying! So what do I do? Start declaring my love for him like a teenager. At this point, Donnie STANDS UP, stretches his arms out and steps towards me. I hugged him so hard and he kissed me on the cheek!!! I could really die! Still hugging him and still crying I tell him something like "I have20been waiting 20 years to meet you! Thank you SO much for coming back! I love you!" STILL hugging him he pats my hair and says in my ear "We do it all for you baby." (Yes he said baby a second time.) I thought I was gonna drop dead of happiness! I let go and he signs my CD. I thank him and try to stop shaking.

This whole time I've been wearing my Donnie jacket - a denim jacket I had custom painted when I was 13 with his face on the back. In my state of insanity I totally forgot to take it off and show it to him! So I'm walking down to Jonathan when Donnie says "Who's that on the back of your jacket baby??!!" (YES he said Baby a third time no exaggeration.) I'm a little more composed now and not crying so I shout back, "That's YOU!" And Donnie goes "Take that jacket off so I can sign it!" AACK! I said "Really??" He said "Yes!" So of course I do it and he lays it out on the table ask me my name and signs "To Heather, All My Love, Donnie Wahlberg 2008." OH >>> MY >>> GOD!!!! I thanked him and he said blew me a kiss!!!!

I hate to gloss over the other for guys but sorry - it was all about the 13 year old in me meeting Donnie. But Jonathan, Joe, Danny and Jordan were all very very sweet! I've been extremely lucky to have met all four before. I thanked them all for reuniting. Jordan said he was excited about the tour. My friend Ava asked me to ask Danny if he was gonna break dance on the upcoming tour so I did. He said yes and that he is ready and can't wait.

There are no words to describe how happy I am!!!!! :)
