Revisiting my review of Doubt

Since seeing and reviewing John Patrick Shanley's new play "Doubt" it has won the Pulitzer for Drama. Woo hoo! And as I've been reading a lot about the play, watching interviews with the cast, etc I found out I was dead wrong about the ending.

In my mind both sides of the story were incredibly compelling and it was difficult to determine who was right and who was wrong. But in the end I was convinced that I knew which side was right. So much so that I praised the play for not being ambigous in the end and giving a clear-cut resolution.

BUT that isn't the case at all! It's the total opposite! It is absolutely ambiguous. So much so that Cherry Jones herself (Sister Aloyisius) isn't even sure if her character did the right thing and hasn't made up her mind personally about the guilt or innocence of the priest.

I was shocked that what I felt to be the answer may not be the answer after all. I was so convinced of who I felt was right that I truly believed that was the resolution of the play. Period. Now I HAVE to go back and see it again. Maybe after a second viewing I'll be on the other side of the argument!
