I can't! This can't be! I was sick last month, too! I feel hot and cold at the same time, crazy congested from chest to nose - no no no! Mind over matter. I'm going to will it away. If I believe I am well then I will be!
Holy Not Posting In My Blog Anymore, Batman! Sooo much going on. Work has absorbed ever iota of my being lately. Well not every iota. But that's how I feel. I think I live at the store now. May as well move my bed, Gaspar and the cats in there. I spend more time in that store than I do anywhere else. Also been consumed with some personal things going on with some friends of mine. Friends truly are an extended family.
On the fun side, Mom, Dad and I finally saw Sweet Charity! After all the drama of the show opening and closing out of town, recasting, reopening - I was just so happy to see it. ANd it was even better than I expected, a pleasant surprise. Usually with all that buildup it falls flat. Not this time. It was a lot of fun and Christina was surprisingly great. I wish I had posted about this when it was fresher in my mind. All in all it was a lot of fun and well done.
The other night Gaspar, Kim, Kerri and I saw Mike Doughty at Bowery Ballroom. Anyone reading this who knows the band Soul Coughing, he was the lead vocalist. The band broke up in 2000 and he's been doing the solo thing, without a record label, ever since. When you bought his selfmade CDs you bought them from the man himself. It rocked. As Doughty called it, it was "small rock." Just the man on his own. Now he has signed with Dave Matthews' label, ATO.
Honestly I'm glad that of all labels he signed with this one. I'm pretty far removed from the music industry now but as far as I can tell they are a label that seems to be about the music, puts out great stuff, quality music, and knows what they're doing. Look what they did for my beloved David Gray. The man goes from small clubs, small dedicated fanbase, and obscurity to selling out Radio City, going platinum and being loved by the masses. The fangirl in me sighs heavily but that rocks for David Gray. Now everyone knows how damn awesome he is.
I'm positive the same is going to happen now for Doughty. "Haughty Melodic" came out this past Tuesday. It's going to be interesting to see how this all develops for him. He has declared the end of "small rock" and has moved onto "medium rock." I guess "large rock" is next in the progression of things. Ha. Dammit. We've been going to see this guy for years and now it's only a matter of time before the annoying teenage twits in my mall are singing his songs.
Do I feel this way just because he has signed with a label? Hells no. My experience in working for labels has left me very jaded and I know that doesn't mean much these days. But Dave Matthews himself seems to be championing this album. He guests on one track and Doughty is playing his crazy festival-like show on Randall's Island. If Doughty is gonna get the push he deserves he has the goods to deliver. Because this album rocks my damn socks.
Everyone go buy it right now!
