Friends In Deed

I was looking at some Rent stuff online and was reminded of this organization that inspired Jonathan Larson while writing Rent. It's called Friends In Deed. It's an organization that provides therapy to those who are dying, caretakers for people of terminal diseases and for people mourning the loss of someone they love. The Life Support group in Rent is based on Friends In Deed. Jonathan was very involved with them as many of his friends were diagnosed with HIV and AIDS. When he himself passed away many people sought their services. Anthony Rapp writes in His memoir about turning to them when his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Rent's 10th Anniversary performance with the original cast a couple years back benefitted Friends In Deed as have many other performances.

As we know Rent is closing in June after 12 years on Broadway. Besides listening to the cast recording, or going to see the show one more time, I think there's a better way to pay tribute to this show that has touched so many - make a donation to Friends In Deed. Maybe you aren't in need of these services, and hopefully you never will be. But this is a great organization that continues to do to great work for people.
