Gavin DeGraw

I have always had this theory that in most cases an artist's first album is likely to be their best. Why? Because they have had an unlimited amount of time to create and nurture their material, draw from the best, and put it out there (depending on how much freedom your label gives you, IF you are with a label at all, yada yada.) I have been a big Gavin DeGraw fans for several years having seen him around New York before J Records signed him. And I thought his first album "Chariot" was great. Rich, soulful, melodic, well crafted with great hooks that weren't cheesy.

So I have been eagerly anticipating his sophomore album, titled simply "Gavin DeGraw." If the title might implies he is struggling for ideas, listening to the album proves it for me. Usually I only post about stuff I love. But this album frustrates me so much! I love Gavin! But this album is so lacking and I don't get why. Now the average listener may like this album. But to me there is no soul to it. One song blends into the other with little distinction. Nothing really grabs my attention. And some of it even makes me cringe with forced lyrics and rhymes you can anticipate.

I guess part of it could be my high expectations for Gavin DeGraw who I think is a true artist and should not be lumped in with all the Top 40 nonsense. (Yes - I know that is hypocritical since this blog is drenched in New Kids On The Block at the moment - I love them but they are bubblegum, nothing more or less and that's why I love them.) It just could have been so much better. The vocal and piano chops are there and strong - but where's the substance? I know he's still got it deep down but not on this album.

Now Tilly And The Wall has a new album coming out next month. I posted their newest video a few months ago and expressed some concerns. C'mon Tilly - don't let me down!
