Miki, one of my sales associates at work, has challenged me to a CD competition. Well, it's not exactly a competition but my competitive nature takes over and makes it one. We're making CDs of music we listen to regularly. A full ten years younger than me - and therefore a bit cooler than me - Miki and I talk about music a lot and I realize just how out of the loop I truly am.
What has become of me! I worked in the music industry for about 8 years before the whole thing went bust and I had to look for a new career. And I've realized something. The dirty, disgusting nature of the business combined with the suicide of the lead singer of my favorite band of all time has soured me on the state of music. It used to be my all-consuming passion. But my true love of music has subsided a bit. I still LOVE my music but it isn't the same. Maybe it's the fact I'm getting older but I find I listen to my older favorites more than new stuff these days. Could also be that most music coming out is crappola and you have to dig deeper than ever for the good stuff.
I hope Miki can open my eyes to some new, good bands. Don't get me wrong - I still discover new bands and am much more adventurous than the average music fan. But my CD collection and concertgoing needs a shot of adrenaline.
I'll post the track listing to my CD for Miki when it's done. I have until Wednesday to get it to him.
If you are listening to anything new and good lately, please post a comment!

Amos Lee! You can get one of his self-produced CD's at his wesite [amoslee.com DUH], but his label debut - Blue Note, no less - comes out this Spring. He's AMAZING!
