"Doubt" and other misc posting stuff

AARRGGHH - this didn't post for some reason yesterday. Pleh technology! Here it is anyway:

Ahhh a day off!

I am particularly stressed lately and I'm look forward to just cleaning up around the house, watching some TV and spending time with Gaspar today. Having one day off a week together can be trying at times, trying to fit everything in on one day.

In the midst of my crazy Rent set adventures I forgot to post about a new Bway play my friend PJ and I went to see recently - John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt."

This should earn a Best Original Play Tony award this June. It was a beautifully crafted show, wonderful acting and concise story-telling. In brief, it is the story of a Catholic school in the 1960's around the time JFK is assassinated concerning an accusation of child molestation.

Cherry Jones playing the nun who is also the principal of the school, Sister Aloysius. She is hard-nosed, opinionated, demanding, and stubborn. But hilarious and touching, too. Then there is Brian O'Byrne (who won the Tony last year for his work in "Frozen") as Father Flynn, who is friendly, funny, caring, down-to-earth, not hard-nosed in the way Sister Aloysius is. Heather Goldenhersh plays Sister James, a teacher who deeply loves her students and teaching but is naive, nervous, insecure at times, and sensitive. Adriane Lenox is very effective as the mother of one of the students.

The subject of the show is obviously not a lighthearted one but it tells the stor with both drama and humor. At 90-minutes it's concise and compelling. It is about more than doubt over the guilt or innocense of those involved in the accusation - it deals with feelings of doubt pertaining to faith, course of action, decisions, regrets, honesty and belief. Each side of accusation is depicted so compelling you could easily take either side. And thankfully "Doubt" doesn't end ambiguously leaving the audience to wonder what the truth is. A must-see!
